I was sad,
I was going to have my one decayed tooth removed,
It was a front tooth,
How would I look before I had another planted,
But just then the sad feeling turned funny sad,
Grandma came into the room,,
Took out her dentures and put them on the table,
She gave me an endearing toothless smile
I hugged her tightly,
Here I was being sad losing one,
And there she was happy without any

He took me in his arms
I felt the crisp Bank bills in his shirt pocket,
jingle of coins in his pant pocket
I knew it,
This man was my ATM card.
I snuggled close to him
Gave him a huge smile.

He had not eaten for two days,
Inside he could hear the rich music of clinking of spoons forks and glasses,
Whilst outside the strings of his heart whined for a morsel,
As he doubled with hunger,
A little girl dressed like a fairy stood before him,
She had a plate full of the most delicious food,
It's my birthday today uncle,
It will give me great joy if you will share my happiness with me,
As she handed out the plate to him,
And don't forget to bless me.

Theirs is a small warm home,

There I am with a family
Where hugs , kisses and laughter comes naturally,
Though not rich,
Little by little they have built their home,
With a mother's love and a father's care,

As a student I was very talkative,
Sometimes I would talk nonstop,
And disrupt the class,
Exasperated my teacher told me to write an essay,"Why I enjoyed talk8ng.
So I wrote:
When mum was pregnant with me,
She loved to nap under our mango tree with a book in the afternoon,
My grandmother would  caution her not to sit under any tree as  suspicious witches lived there,
But mum would not heed her.
Now a good talkative witch lived in that tree
And as mum napped  we would talk for hours giggling and laughing
Sometimes grandmother would call out to mum for tea,
But the witch made sure mum was in deep sleep,
The witch enjoyed my company
You see she was the only one left in the tree,
Her family had gone to live in the baobab tree,
So she felt lonely.
All those months I had become a chatterbox,
Even after birth I started to coo all the time,
Bewitched by a witch I am ma'am.

I searched for my extra teeth and eyes,
Frantically I looked in my drawers,
Nothing,
I searched under the pillows,
Naw!
Under the bedcovers,

The teeth cup was empty,
May be I left them in the bathroom,
No, wait a minute,
I had just cleaned my teeth and returned them on the drawer,
Together with my specs.
Where did they go?
That sly old dad has taken them again,
There he was at the table
Happily reading a newspaper and munching breakfast with my props.

Doing little things make you happy,
Today my maid didn't come,
I wa happy,
I had the house to myself.
I made my own breakfast,
Had it peacefully,
Without her hovering around me.
I washed the dishes,
Merry and cheerful,
Singing out of tune old songs,
As spurts of water spluttered on me,
My muscles were awakening,
Urging me to jiggle and wriggle..
Then I called the watchman to help me hoover the place,
I gave him the hoover and told him to move about freely ,
It was his first time with an electric item,
He made a through job not leaving a single spot chuckling and grinning,
He was more happy as I gave him bakshish(tip).
I felt exhilarated and experienced the spritual awakening of living.

But it's  value makes the world dance to its tunes,
A paper that has power,
It creates status and its greed destroys humanity.
It can cause fraud and injustice,
Most importantly break relationships.
At my age and with my children abroad,
I sometimes need help from friends and relatives,
Like shopping, oversee repairs in the house,
ordering things online or getting things for me from overseas.
But I make sure I pay them in full for the favours they have spent on my behalf,
So next time they don't hesitate to help.
I only need physical help,
For me maintaining relationship is most important,
And sometimes when I am ignored help,
I just look towards Allah,
He finds a way.

She is emotional,

With her tears and screeching voice she makes matters from molehills to mountains,
Her family doesn't give in because she is right,
But because of her behaviour,
She must have the last say and win whatever may come.
When she is in tantrum mode I try keep a distance,
I agree with her to everything she says,
Hold my silence,
And when she calms down,
I become her counsellor,
I make her see the other side of the coin,
She realises her mistake and promises to not go off the handle,
