I Have a Yong Suster
(anonymous Medieval English riddle-poem, circa 1430)
translation by Michael R. Burch

I have a young sister
Far beyond the sea;
Many are the keepsakes
That she sent me.

She sent me the cherry
Without any stone;
And also the dove
Without any bone.

She sent me the briar
Without any skin;
She bade me love my lover
Without longing.

How should any cherry
Be without a stone?
And how could any dove
Be without a bone?

How should any briar
Be without a skin?
And how could I love my lover
Without longing?

When the cherry was a flower,
Then it had no stone;
When the dove was an egg,
Then it had no bone.

When the briar was unborn,
Then it had no skin;
And when a maiden has her mate,
She is without longing!

This poem was sung in the movie "Animal House" by a college troubadour played by Stephen Bishop. A toga-clad John Belushi destroyed his guitar! Keywords/Tags: riddle, medieval, Middle English, young, sister, cherry, stone, dove, bone

Geode, a Resemblance
by Michael R. Burch

Take this geode with its rough exterior—
crude-skinned, brilliant-hearted ...

a diode of amethyst—wild, electric;
its sequined cavity—parted, revealing.

Find in its fire all brittle passion,
each jagged shard relentlessly aching.

Each spire inward—a fission startled;
in its shattered entrails—fractured light,

the heart ice breaking.

If i kiss you here.
Will that brings us together?
Will our love be an ever after?

If i touch you there
will that bridge build faster,
for us to be together?

if this illustionary love be real
I'd be a thief, a forbidden deal
Holding a broken seal
Of the unspoken truth
Of everyone i'll hurt.

I don't want that, I'd rather be alone
And hold a heart of stone.
Be at peace to the dream out of reach.
At least i know how to love.
A fictitious write, me dreaming, kissing something forbidden. Many thanks to those who read.

I need to feel the sun on my face,
Talk things through with myself
and maybe get things straight for once.
For all I know right now is
I can't breathe
and I'm waiting for this all to end.

I wish I was as cold as stone,
at least then I wouldn't feel a thing.
I wish I didn't have this heart,
at least then I wouldn't hurt like this;
standing in the rain burning my skin.
I would be strong enough to watch you hurt me in the end.

I feel so all alone
Now there is nothing more to give,
nothing left to take.
I thought by now that I'd be fine,
but these tears keep blurring my eyes as I reach out to you,
as you start to turn away from me just like they did.

I wish I was as cold as stone,
at least then I wouldn't be afraid,
of all this pain and sadness happening again.
I wish I didn't have this heart,
at least then I wouldn't hurt like this,
I would be strong enough to watch you hurt me in the end.

I wish I was cold as stone,
at least then I wouldn't be hurt again,
because I can feel it coming
from a thousand miles away.
I wish I was cold as stone,
at least then I could turn away before this all gets too much.

I'm just waiting for the day that this ends,
because I've never been very good at getting people to stay.
I just wish I was as cold as stone.

I can no longer feel emotion
No more pain
No more sorrow
No happiness or love

My heart has gone cold
I no longer feel anything
Though I wish I did
It’s barren in my heart

For how long this time
I have no clue
But at this present moment
It might be for the best

Cold as stone
Free from anguish
From temptation and sorrow
Life is funny this way

I still have my caring nature
But no one new will get my love
My happiness is completely gone
So I’m now a shell

A shell with nothing inside
Death no longer concerns me
Heartache and misery have no hold
For this stone cold heart

I run,
In every direction at once
I think,
Unholy thoughts without regret
I feel,
The shame of the world as my own
I stand,
Unfazed by it all
I know,
Nothing is written in stone

A child that loves nature
Nature is everywhere
and everything...
...there is no unnatural thing

Humankind grew out of nature like all
else living or non living in the common sense.

He wants to create something living, breathing
out of mud and blood and sweat
Cause the only difference is love
in a living and less living organsim.

A stone can feel satisfied and does respond
to environmental action
but he...
does not feel.
Until it gets so loved
that it becomes
living beeing.
Now I remain a polished stone
The river coursing around me
In soft and easy contours
Yet my life was not always known
By this harmonious flow

But craggy and rough, long ago
Struck ten million times
By rocks and sand and more
My smooth and glossy skin, I owe
To turbulence and tumbling

Even water alone shaped me
By sheer endurance and patience
Grinding and wearing
Turning me into what you see
A smooth and polished stone

So wonder not that you feel worn
And feel struck by blows undeserved
Count this for a purpose
For with the tossing you are born
A smooth and polished stone

A Polished Stone was inspired by a talk in church a week or so ago.  The speaker (my neighbor and friend) talked about how stones in a river get tumbled and parts broken off of them until they eventually get rounded and polished.

Then he likened that to us and how we also get polished by time by getting our rough edges worn off.

It's OK to have a stone in your path.  It's OK to get worn a bit - you'll simply be more polished.
