Gathering wood

When I think of those days, I only
remember gathering wood in the cold
in my black coat so I could get a fire going
in the cast iron of a gray early morning;
I dream what it is to be a man lying
beside a delicate woman, sad and quiet,
playing the mandolin, looking at her as
if she were a couple of plums together like
a cluster within reaching distance on the branch;
thinking of the lunar dust of her face, and how
her fingers were like feathers; I heard
the silence of the mill wheel not turning
in the stream and the wild turkeys not drinking;
I knew they had hypnotized themselves wide-
eyed and staring into the steel ax of the creek.
We climb the Koro hill.

Forty years and still ascending
gives a good feel.

We stand under a Madhuca tree
blossoming in March heat and rain.

From the hilltop
the valley down below
looks dreamy grey.

We've greyed and graded
past full bloom.

In the wafting fragrance of Madhuca
we pray to hold on
for some more.

When it came to love
I had no real plan
I know I wanted to connect in an intimate way
with experimentation and playfulness

I was short on experience
there was a pandemic
I’d had few ‘at-bats’
that’s a sports metaphor

Much of it seemed surreal and abstract
like we’d entered another realm of everyday places
there was a subtle unpredictability
that was unfiltered, instinctive and unapologetically unhinged

freedom permeated every element
still, our collaboration allowed for honest conversation
I remember asking, “What are we doing?”
Thinking back, It underlined how vastly different our two experiences were

BLT Merriam Webster word of the day challenge 03/21/25:
Permeate = to pass or spread through something
There's a form of rodent
In Latin form "quill pig".
He isn't very fast.
He isn't very big.

But be very cautious
If you encounter one of these.
They are very nasty,
Mean, to say the least.

They bristle up and like cacti,
They have a vicious will...
You don't need to touch to be
Nailed with a quill.

They will flick their tail
To let their venom fly,
So give this beast some room
When you see him going by.

People who are insecure
Will be just like them.
You don't want to be around
The subtle poison pen

The pen will rend and skewer.
The pen will have its art.
It will send a poison quill

Straight into your heart.
