I want to wake
Scot Powers Jan 2013
Dancing clowns in the market square today
birds are singing, wind brushes my face
people laughing, people clapping , having a good time
sadly feels like I awoke in a different time

As I look around I slowly see
everything is as real as I want it to be
a lesson learned from a book I read long ago
seems to be the only thing is to let go

as the day fades away
and the moonlight glows
staring at the midnight sky
the mood seems to flow

I want to wake to this again
I want to take you by the hand
I want to wake to this again
I want to live like this again

Out the door
Scot Powers Jan 2013
As I sit and shake my head
hurt and bruised by the words you said
I look about and wonder why
I have not already said goodbye
perhaps it is not the season
perhaps you don't see reason
all I know is that when I'm here
I pace the halls in constant fear
of what I may say or do
to draw your ire the way I do
I know my daughter needs a dad
but I think I will soon go mad
I know I can't take much more
before I am out the door

The distance
Scot Powers Jun 2023
Staring out the window
As the landscape rushes by
Storm clouds on the horizon
Paint a blood red sky
Feeling melancholy
As the day now turns to night
The distance that's between us
Fades just like the light

Tomorrow
Scot Powers Feb 2015
Moving slowly as I walk
through the darkened hall
voices seemed to call my name
beckoning from afar
are they really spirits
moved on to another plain
or is it creeping madness
insidious in its pace

The headaches started weeks before
but I will not let on
The fear that daily grips my soul
will it last for long?
my memories are fading
lost within a maze
a labyrinth of my own design
oh it feels so strange

The people that I encounter
each and every day
some I seem to recognize
others just seem to fade
I can't remember all the time
who I really am
how I came to be this way
or what will happen next

The chilling part of this tale
is it happens every day
some of us are old and frail
while others still like to play
nature plays its tricks on us
some are cruel indeed
robbing us of our life
of our will to be

I don't know what I'm afraid of
but the fear is truly real
sit and watch the sunset
until it disappears
how on earth did this happen
just what was the cause
something that I ate perhaps
or maybe just a clot

Whatever is the answer
my fate is surely sealed
today uneasy happiness
tomorrow rest in the field

Lightly
Scot Powers Jan 2015
Lightly you did enter
at first merely a thought
but steadily each day it seems
you are closer to my heart

what is this fascination
that has me in its grip
fighting to keep my balance
as my deck begins to tip

tossed about relentlessly
the loving waves begin to crush
all the weight pressed down on me
oh it's such a rush

The Cold Wet Ground
Scot Powers Feb 2015
Through the years
and through the tears
we suddenly come to see
the damage we've done
to all those someones
takes root and begins to feed

Waking at night
not just from fright
the cold sweat does remain
the shivers that climb
up and down your spine
A reminder of all that pain

The pain you inflicted
whilst still in your youth
as you struggled to live with a theme
stomping on feelings
of those already reeling
with only one foot in the ring

Oh you will suffer
I promise you that
as what comes indeed goes around
remember this when
you cry for your sins
alone on the cold wet ground

For all to see
Scot Powers Jan 2013
Every morning
same old rush
gather my things
catch the bus

Off to toil
for my bread
while you lie in your bed

But that is not
the life for me
I must look after
your endless needs

To what end
I ask myself
for all i do
my will must bend

I hang my head
when I have heard
your scathing words
that seem absurd

I bite my tounge
and curse inward
far to often on the verge

To leave you here
for all to see
I've done my time
my mind is free

mirrored in time
one looking forward
one looking behind
together as one
as only could be
face the world

working together
learning forever

Hello again
Scot Powers Feb 2013
The day I have awaited
now is drawing near
I am filled with happiness
and a little bit of fear
have the winds of change blown high
and cast me adrift
or will we look in each others eyes
remembering why we missed...

Old Skippy
Scot Powers Jan 2023
The deck is awash
Wind rips the sails
The crying and screaming
The birds and the waves
My senses are reeling
Can this be real
"All hands on deck!"
Old Skippy screams

Wet  rigging is whipping
Can barley grab hold
Cold rain beats down
Chilling my soul
The cries of my mates
Can barely be heard
All know their place
Their tasks are secured

Float as we may
A mere cork on the sea
Holding out hope
Riding the waves
May God have mercy
Upon all our souls
Cried the ships Chaplin
Old Skippy just groaned

A lifetime at sea
More days than on land
The old crusty mariner
Had many a scare
No longer bothered
by things such as fate
Calmly he waited
Claimed by the waves.....

The Hunger
Scot Powers Dec 2022
Awakened from my slumber
as hunger begs its toll
the hollow aching yearning begins to take control
arise I must and seek to sate
the life-force that I crave
out upon the countryside where I ply my nightly trade

Lonely travelers in the night
bade wary by the wails
wander through the forest still
scoff at folkies tales
as darkness does decend and shadows increase their daze
does a shiver go up their spine
as they meet my empty gaze

The deed is swift and satisfies
As once again I'm whole
It's seems that from the cruelty
Life again unfurls
No I shall not linger here
As darkness turns to light
I shall retreat back to my home
And slumber till tonight......
