Rain
Rob Rutledge Mar 2013
When I was a child I would run and play in puddles left in the hollow of the road.

As I got older I shunned the rain and wished for it only to go away.

Now older still, I stand once more in the rain,

Head tilted toward the sky

Just to feel sensation.

Fallow
Rob Rutledge Feb 2013
It's hard to let go,
When we have so
Little to hang on to.

All those seeds once sown
Never took shoot to grow.
The soil that was tillered
And tethered to your heart
Lays fallow, unkempt,
Scorched away and torn apart.

Yet,

Even the ash that fell
Like autumnal rain
Will, with time, be blown away.
With time and space to grow
The land can breath
The heart can sow.

Diet Coke
Rob Rutledge Jan 2013
You tell me to study hard,
Get a good job.
Be as sharp as a rat and you'll go far.
Make your money,
Settle down.
In that big city life
Or quiet country town.

You tell me rock and roll
Ain't worth trying for,
Yet its better than these religions
People keep dying for.
I don't want to line somebody else's pocket,
As they hoard their gold away
In a bank vault and lock it.

You tell me life is just one big joke
But I see nobody laughing.
People in gutters
Cold alone and broke
As so called stars sell their souls for
Diet Coke.
Written initially as song lyrics, in a kind of attempted Bob Dylan style. At least when i read it, I read it with Bob's voice :)

Criminal
Rob Rutledge Jan 2013
I am a criminal,
So you and the papers say.
They would put me away
For countless nights and days.
Tucked away "safe" in jail,
All for the choice of herbs I inhale.
That they would only have their way...

Yet I am no marauding mobster,
No gangster for hire.
I smoke in the evenings
When daylight is fleeting
And withdraw to my rooms to retire.
I am no plundering pirate
Pillaging your private property.
I go about my day,
As right as I may,
You will find no evil protégée.

I am spoken in the same breath
As delinquents and undesirables.
The infamously unfavourable,
Mire on our tireless society.
Well I am tired now,
Fatigued.
I've grown weary of living
In your narrow minded
Make believe.

Yet I leave you be.
Keep to mine and own.
It is you who lights the torches
From high deluded throne.
It is you who crafted and rounded
That perfect stone,
Hurled with such indiscrimination
Always many, never alone.

Each night now I wonder,
When I cross that imaginary line.
Such fools we've been,
The waste obscene,
Who really commits the crime?

Scar
Rob Rutledge Dec 2012
Our skin is like a canvass,
Etched upon by the lines of age.
Its tale is told by the scars that unfold.
Some made of sorrow,
Some born of rage.
An unturned page, ripped and unsold,
Tossed into the fiery blaze.

At least it kept us warm.
For the winter was rough,
The land cracked and torn.
The trees lay barren,
Bark scorched, for ever more.

Turn the page and start anew!
Yet still the scars remain.
We look ourselves, for now at least,
Though we will never be the same.

The smile beneath the shadow
Of our eyes, anointed red,
Can never belie what we have endured.
The hopelessness of being burned
From a trial by fires warming allure.

So although the flesh may falter,
No longer to be found anew,
Our eyes shall burn with a fiery purpose.
Till the day life's debt is due.

Guarded
Rob Rutledge Dec 2012
If only that we would stay our tongues
That slither round and upon
The words we never wanted to whisper.
Much can be left unsaid,

Broken
         thoughts
among
a blizzard
                      And cast into
.lead.
.         .
  .                .
.                         .
Hindered by the fall.
We call into the gloom.
A hand reaching out beyond
That ashen white hue.
Too late she says,
You have had your say,
Your heart and mind
Have had their way.
Each day now lays cold
Whether due to winters weather
Or a chance lost to the storm,
Of which I'm none to sure.
I shall sip on silence
And guard my tongue,
For now and ever more.
The middles a bit odd I know. Just edited it on a whim.

Oh, My God
Rob Rutledge Dec 2012
I lost my mind
Yet found a god.
Not yours
Nor Abraham's
Nor one I've met before.

It came between this world
And the one that lies beneath.
Reached forth with countless arms
That sought to caress relief.

It did not make the world
It merely rolled the dice.
We were a fluke of sorts.
An unexpected development
In the petri dish of life.

It is a scientist you see
That tinkered with what would be.
No omniscience
No omnipotence
Just a conscience none too clean.
For it despairs as much as we
At the horrors that have come to be.

I see now it has no power
To alter what has begun
No more than we can
Alter the colour of our sun.
Once I would rage at the sky
Calling yours a Sod.
Now I understand
For I have met Oh,
He/she/it is now my god.

State of Play
Rob Rutledge Oct 2012
These halls seem somewhat hollow,
Whose walls once knelled with
Wit, charm and sorrow.
The silence erodes the keystones' arch
Subdued subjects that once did sing
Depart.

That ancient bell tied to towers steeple,
No longer speaks for the wants
And needs of it's people.
For no man, woman or child
Could be found and riled
To hold fast and grasp the rope.
Hold firm and ring the bells of hope.

The sound of truth cuts fine.
Old lies no longer aloof.
When smoke does rise
From thatched houses roof,
We may live to see the proof attached,
Foundations subsiding.
Revolutions confiding
Inside the very stone itself.
Mortar fights Mortar
Till neither has health.
Candelabra arbitrates,
Fiery death from water.
The dual will slaughter us all.

It shall last till the hall can not past the moment of the present.
All its tenants cast out to the depths of mortal unrepentant.
A more pleasant alternative to uncertain death
May stray your way in an unwanted effigy
Cunningly disguised as yourself
As you drink to good health
Comfortably delved into the
Abode of bliss.
A delusional  apotheosis.

A dish best served frozen
Rob Rutledge Sep 2012
Today I put down the pen
And raised my sword,
To charge down a path forlorn.
Past a river of scorn
That lies in the shade of
Humanity torn.

Branches that weep
And overhang this road,
Stand sentinel, skeletal and cold.
They whisper to us yet we shan't be told.
Now far gone from all moral code.

There are no good intentions
Once cursed by interventionist actions.
You sir shall ******* steel,
Eat well, for tomorrow you will
Dine on your final meal.

The trail of treachery is long,
And shall last till all bitterness is gone.
All that now remains
Is a feeling to try explain.
The thought that lies dormant in my head;
What's done is done,
No good can come from the dead.

With a sigh,
I put down my sword.
And withdraw my pen once more.

Words like Water
Rob Rutledge Sep 2012
The words that flowed unchecked yet tidal
Lay dammed by life not calm but idle.
Serene is a dream for these words of water
That slipped through the fingers of another man's daughter.
For life plays heavy on liquid minds
Which dwell too long on the swells of time.

Yet when the moon shines true,
Reflected in that greatest hue,
Horizon of the deepest blue
Deep within our minds.
The words torrent, cascade and surge
To purge unworthy from our sight.
Waters rage, fires billow.
Carrying carrion far into the night.

Music
Rob Rutledge Aug 2012
It starts with silence
surrounding all sensation.
A fleeting pause for contemplation...

Disturbed by sound
Stirring the soul
A bi-product or primary goal?

It begins to surge
slowly at first.
Build the tension
Till it leaks.
Go with the tempo
Till the Crescendo peaks
And falls.

We fall to,
Beautifully bound to this structure of sound.

Only what we are called

All is not seen nor heard.

No Reason
Rob Rutledge Jul 2012
No reason to fall asleep,
No reason to stay awake,
No reason to stop and weep,
No reason to give or take.
No reason to stop trying,
No reason to start at all,
No reason for truth or lying,
No reason to have a ball.

No reason to leave,
No reason to breath,
No reason to stay,
No reason to delay.
No reason why we're born to rot,
Then again,
No reason why not.

Deity
Rob Rutledge Jun 2012
If you were a god for a day
With the world in your hands,
To mould as clay,
Would you delay to start anew?
Wipe the slate clean
Bidding evil adieu.

Personally?

If it walks then let it run,
If it talks then let it sing,
If it flies then let it soar
Higher than it's ever been.
If if wanders let it roam,
If it absconds then leave it so,
If it dares then let it dream
That it is greater than it seems.
And if it all shall stumble
Shoulders once held firm
That start to crumble,
Under the weight of our
Burdened thoughts.
Then let those bones reform,
Skin sewn anew,
Or it shall forever be for naught.

A Story
Rob Rutledge Jun 2012
At the start we are all helpless,
Utterly reliant.
We stand
We fall
We cry
We crawl.
Not always so compliant.

In the middle we are at our peak.
Suddenly defiant,
We smoke
We drink
We ****
We think,
We forge our own alliance.

At the end we are all frightened.
Our life is at its tether.
We think
We're ******
So we'll drink
To good luck.
And hope that we'll all
Live forever.

Moral Decay
Rob Rutledge Jun 2012
Once donned,
This shinning suit of armour
Now lies cracked and worn
Through chemistry.
In an age forlorn of chivalry,
Good intentions turn to dust
As honour gives way to lust.

We shall do what we must.
And must do what we shall
In a shallow state of mind.
For when I replaces us,
We know all hope is lost.

That will not help you on your way.
Instead forge your own trail
For others to follow one day.

Never shy from an opportunity
Throw yourself through every door.

Now go,

Kinship
Rob Rutledge May 2012
You may search for kin in the blood that binds,
The haemoglobin of heritage entwined.
Or you may wade your way
Through the rich and meek
To find those of whom you speak,
Those so oft' hidden in plain sight.

Trust not all that you can see
For disguised treachery
Can lie in the softest of smiles.
Devious plans of mental mockery
Executed with cunning and guile.

Look instead then to the conquests!
Not to those we won outright,
But to the ones that fall to unions
Under starlight, under night.

Perhaps even then we will find
With our silent siege of time
That the Kinship sails on blind.
When the mindful heart
Meets the heartless mind.

Entropic
Rob Rutledge May 2012
The future is strange is it not?
All our hopes and dreams
Aspirations sewn at the seams
Of a dwindling reality.
Everything is possible,
I suppose.
And if we concentrate just so,
We too can take a glimpse of the show
That lies behind drawn curtains.

Nothing is certain
This I think I know.
Yet at times we feel the ebb and flow
Of futures yet to pass.
Not to be divined from entrails
Of a broken looking glass.
Mirrors have their uses
To show what others see,
But no great revelations
Of what will come to be.

Have our minds been made,
Long before ourselves?
Are we cartesian nightmares
Unto which we delve?
Is our image of ourselves
As foolish as I think?
And what becomes of the world
In the instance that we blink.

Have these words been uttered
By anothers tongue.
Under the guise of destiny
A pointless race to run.
Thoughts implanted,
Minds enchanted
By the most temporal of enemies.
Throttle the future with me now
As we fight the tides of entropy.

The Universe
Rob Rutledge Apr 2012
The Universe, The Universe
As far as the eye can see,
And more.
Beyond a hundred horizons
Or any lands lore.
A law unto itself,
To which we are all subjects.
The cheek!
To be so intrusive and yet elusive in kind.

From here to always
And every step along the way.
It is infinitely large,
And we are infinitely small
Or so they say.
Well then rejoice!
We are forever insignificant.
Our most triumphant failures
Shall not stir the sea of eternity
From it's silent expansion.

Market Forces
Rob Rutledge Apr 2012
A city stirs, chaos ensues.
A thousand feet shuffle on
Into the gloom.
As markets spew skewed
Statistics, of
Fortunes faded
And riches made in minutes.

I see the lightning.
I can smell the thunder.
With all the rancid sounds
Of society torn asunder.

They have the need.
The need for greed
And new age prophets.
Preaching and predicting
The rise and fall.
Like Benedictine's of old.
So secure and safe,
Kept warm by misguided faith
In numbers.

As stocks begin to slumber
And those feet go shuffling home,
The city sighs a relief.
Guiding it's flock
Through trains and planes
Like a Shepard leads his sheep.

Exodus
Rob Rutledge Apr 2012
I remember so much and yet so little of that day,
I remember the woods near our home where I would used to play.
The den I made, smothered by oak and fern,
The dragonflies sailing zephyrs and their power that I yearned.

I remember clearer the presence of my father,
Struggling through gaps he was far to large for,
His smile strangely absent that day.
I remember words he whispered
"come child, today we are away."

Those words mean little now
So much more than they did back then,
When my mind idled with dragonflies
Locked in that wooden den.

I remember seeing the earth
Looking still, if not serene.
Defiant in it's rotation.
As countless ships,
Starward monoliths
Depart with naive expectation.

Some decided to stay,
As some always do.
The rest sail for space in search of silent refuge.
Once more we forgot ourselves
Embracing our own  foolish divinity.
Forgetting the folly of our past
As it echoes unto infinity.

I remember once, now gazing at alien constellations,
The lines we drew in shale and sand to mark our different nations.
The pettiness we adored and the diplomacy we abhorred,
We burnt the earth behind us
And fled unto the stars.
The last thing I remember,
That day in late September,
The last solar systems' ember
Was the rusting glow of Mars.

I forgot how much I missed that home
Over the twelve cold years in space alone.
This place is not so bad,
But the trees weep strange,
Leaves drooped and sad.
From my window I see my grandson run
Chasing the shadows of new earth's twinned suns.
Fresh from the forrest
A new found den.
A second chance
Don't
Fail again.

Childhood Days
Rob Rutledge Mar 2012
Once when we were children,
We would run to here and there.
Across the hills of our homeland
With the wind in our fair hair.
The sun would shine
The rain would fall,
Never to hinder our play.
And all that could stop us
Was the call of our mothers
At the darkening of each day.

Sticks became our swords back then,
Keen of edge and shining bright.
The willow became our fortress
To defend until the night.
And when our foes were weeping
Once more we became the child.
Fast asleep we were sleeping
Imagination running wild.

We got that little bit older,
That ever bit more bolder.
Ambition came to soon.
We went to school
Were told what to do,
And all that we could be.
Some said 'Spaceman'
One 'Veterinarian'
The wise child said 'Happy'

"No No! You need a profession"
Seemed to be the moral of that lesson.
But the teacher didn't understand the question
That she asked.
For her days of dreaming
And childish scheming
Were lost in a distant past.

Iceni
Rob Rutledge Mar 2012
Those feet that once stood tall and proud
Under dark obsidian clouds,
Travel now once more upon
The hallowed grounds of Albion.
Through shrines and shires the Iceni ride
To the seat of ancient power,
Cross moors and mountains
Past marble fountains
To the steps of a Roman tower.
How they shall cower!
As Boudicca comes spear in hand.
They'll soon retreat,
Give up and leave
Back to their promised land.
