Light to Light
Anthony Mayfield Jul 2018
Tell me I’m good
You don’t have to mean it
I just need to hear it
Sanctuary is the hood on my big green Sweatshirt
Head covered up
And looking down at my cold bare feet

I’m tangled in my mind
A mess of monthly mistakes
Keep me up at night
It’s on my plate like a sour meal
So tell me that I’m good
So I can heal

Look me in the eye
There’s a refuge in the air
Give me a look
A glance
A stare
Then I’ll meet you there

Free me to the stars
It must be better than here
Please give me a chance
I’ll navigate
You steer

Forever I’d run away
Ignoring my problems
Telling myself I’ll be ok
Why do the words to say elude us?
Following the dark pathway
Don’t know where it goes
Such an unknown future
But we live the life
Until we’re free
Dark to dark
Light to light
Surviving my insecurities day to day

Vow
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
Vow
We may fall into ourselves,
Lack in conversation,
Succumb to our fears,
Revert to trepidation.
They say together we’re wrong,
But when the thunder rolls,
Remember we’re our own,
And we can love.
We may mince our words,
Contradict ourselves,
Try to fix what hurts,
But make it all the worse.
The wings of snow white doves,
Wrap around the two of us.
Accept our fates are forged from above.

We may say forever
Though we don’t try all the time.
We may dance together.
Though we don’t always step right.
The others want us gone,
Stuck in stormy weather.
It’s going to be hard,
But I know we can stay.
Don’t leave me,
I pray.
Don’t reduce me to begging.
I need you here.
Please stay forever.
I know we can stay forever.
Stay forever

Gaia
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
Here I sit
Upon this old rustic wood
Gazing upon her untouched shore
Her wind softly kisses me
And caresses my back
Her tears fall as cracked brown spotted leaves
Making way for fresh green feelings in spring
It’s quiet here
With just her and I
Nobody says a word
Yet I can hear her contently sigh
She greets me with her shiny bright eye
And whispers
Welcome home
Welcome home

Winter Wings
Anthony Mayfield Feb 2019
I was born yesterday
Blinking eyes in the Cape Divine
Divinity was my riot
Divine was I
Glorious
With wings whiter than snow
A span for miles
Higher than Heaven
But...
I fell
I fell for a love without voice
And a reach without arms
It spins me around
And slaps me on the ground
My winter wings are gone now
I died today
And tomorrow
It will happen all over again
Who knows
The full extent
Of the fool I have become
I died today. And tomorrow it will happen all over again.

Dark
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
In the dark of the night,
The secrets crawl
Out from their tombs.
Born into fright,
My heart calls
For the soul’s survival.
I want to tell you
It’s too dark at night.
It's too dark at night...

Restless
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
The ceiling's so appealing
On this winter night
I'm too scared to dream
The creaks in the house
Are a nightmare's song
Dear demons,
Please let me sleep tonight

This room seeps my doom
As the night wears on
I am in so deep
If I wake I'll apologize
But if while I sleep I die

Then I'll be free tonight

Dear demons,
Please let me sleep tonight

Well then...

I should be falling asleep
I shouldn't dwell on what tomorrow brings
Too tired to fall asleep
Too awake to think
Yet I should be falling asleep
A dream is a dream no matter what it seems
I should be falling asleep
But I'm too afraid to sleep
As I drift into the deep
Oh no
I'm asleep
Caught in another dream...
Dear Demons, let me sleep tonight

Where You Want To Go
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
And there is nothing,
Nothing at all,
Separating us from internal storms.
There is nothing,
Nothing to say,
It's all been said.
Now there's nowhere,
Nowhere to fall,
Nowhere left to sail.
Down that beaten path,
A lane to fail.

Where you want to go
Is a place I cannot see.
Where you want to go
Is a place I don't believe in.
Where you want to go
May as well be a nasty dream.
Where you want to go
Won't include me.
It's a place I cannot stand.
There, you can't hold any hands.

I regret all of it.
Do you?

Because I'm still right here,
Scarred from your sorrow.
Where you want to go
Will leave you hollow.
So no.
Please no.
Don't you dare dig this hole.

You'll be buried.
Little and broken

Ask Yourself
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
Ask yourself
Can you change the world?
Can you make its heart bleed?
Are you capable of storming its tallest of mighty towers?
Can you ring its shrillest of bells?
Ask yourself
Can you rule the world?
In the absence of a blood king by right,
Can you take charge?
Can you create the Empire of Necessity?
Tell yourself
No one died and made you king
No one sheds your mighty wings
But still
Someone can find them true
In the realm this side of blue
Tell yourself
You’ll do just fine
You’ll be ok
Just give your best shine
Ask yourself
Then tell me
When you can be
Finally free
Just ask

Pity
A dangerous weapon of choice
She let Him know
They shared a common voice
He became addicted to her

Heaven
He felt like an angel in Heaven
Every night when she lay with Him
But is it true love
When your soul is long gone?

Danger
What she felt every night by His side
She knew He’d do it if He saw her cry
Finger on trigger
He pointed to his head
Unfortunately, this is based on a true story. I had a friend who's boyfriend constantly threatened to commit suicide if she broke up with him even though she wasn't happy with him. Emotional abuse may not leave a physical scar, but emotional scars are just as if not more painful than visible scars.

Revelation
Anthony Mayfield Jun 2018
Lay down your arms
As the gathering starts.
It's futile, my friend,
Don't you see?
And pray to your gods
As the Bird of Death comes.
We're living in prophecy.
Brother
O Brother
Dear Brother
Sweet Brother,
I'll save you.
I'll fight you.
I will **** you.
At the gathering revelation.
